Pro Bono Legal Services

Provided by Access Pro Bono Society of British Columbia

Provides free and pro bono legal services to individuals throughout BC.
The following programs are offered:
  • Summary Advice Program: Provides free legal advice to individuals on a full range of legal issues including family, immigration, criminal, mental health, and civil law (such as debt, employment, welfare, and housing matters). Please note that the SAP cannot assist with emergency issues and does not provide any services (e.g., representation, notarization, draXing, etc.) As we are a non-profit organization, we rely on volunteers and appointments are booked 2 to 4 weeks in advance, when available. In order to book a 30-minute free consultation with a volunteer lawyer, clients may call or email the SAP at 604-878-7400 from Monday to Friday 9:30 am to 4:30 pm,.
  • Lawyer Referral Service: Helps British Columbians of any income to find a suitable lawyer to serve their legal needs. Provides a half-hour of free legal consultation. Instructions on how to access this service is available online.
  • Roster Program: Provides pro bono legal representation services to individuals and non-profit organizations of limited means and with meritorious cases. Representation is available for ongoing cases at the Court of Appeal, in judicial reviews, and in areas of law including family and employment law. Services also include a solicitor's program for non-profit organizations (non-litigious) and a wills and estates program. More information is available online.
  • Virtual Family Mediation Program: Provides free online family mediation and advice services to low-and modest-income families. Clients have access to independent legal advice and a mediator. Both parties must agree to mediation. All meetings take place over the phone, or video conferencing software. Please email familymediation@accessprobono.ca to receive the application form. Further information available here
  • Residential Tenancy Program: Provides free legal assistance and representation to low-and modest-income tenants who have scheduled hearings before the Residential Tenancy Branch. The program can assist with contesting an eviction, disputing an illegal rent increase, seeking compensation for loss of quiet enjoyment (e.g., illegal entries, incessant noise), seeking an order for repairs, recovering a security deposit, and appearing at a hearing. Please email the program manager at tenancylaw@accessprobono.ca to refer a client into the program. Further information available here
  • Islamophobia Legal Assistance Hotline: Provides free and confidential legal advice to individuals who have faced discrimination, harassment, or violence because they are Muslim or are perceived to be Muslim. To file a case or inquire, please call the hotline at 604-343-3828
