Victim Support Services - qathet SAFE

Provided by Powell River Community Services Association (PRCSA)

Provides support services for victims living in the qathet region.
Two main support programs are offered, 1) specialized victim support services, and 2) police-based victim services.

Specialized Victim Support Services: Provides support and advocacy for those who have been harmed by power-based crimes. This program provides individuals with:
  • Emotional and practical support
  • General and justice-related information, including the legal system, court preparation and orientation
  • Support in completing Victim Impact Statements (VIS) and Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) applications
  • Referrals to other supportive community programs
  • Help creating a Safety Plan

This program supports individuals dealing with:
  • Gender-based violence
  • Power and control
  • Domestic violence
  • Intimate partner violence and all forms of relationship violence
  • Elder abuse
  • Sexual assault (child, youth, adult and historical)
  • Child abuse


Police Based Victim Support Services: PBVS staff works together with the Powell River RCMP to support and advocate for the rights of victims. PBVS program services include:
  • Helps individual get the information that they might need from police investigations and the criminal justice system, as well as information on victim rights, trauma response and coping strategies.
  • Provides individuals with referrals to a wide range of community support services.
  • Offers crisis interventions and emotional support to the victims, witnesses and family members affected by police incidents involving crime or trauma.
  • Helps to fill out documents, create safety plans, apply and register for eligible programs such as Crime Victim Assistance Program, and connect with other services.
  • Provides court updates, and will go with victims to Crown Counsel meetings, court proceedings and in-person court orientations, and will help with witness preparation and Victim Impact Statements and Restitution Forms.
  • Provides a Crisis Canine Therapy dog who works alongside Victim Service staff to offer support to victims, witnesses, and family members affected by crime and other traumatic incidents.
