Drug Checking and Overdose Prevention Centre - SUSTAIN Powell River

Provided by SUSTAIN Powell River

Provides harm reduction services in Powell River and Tla'amin Nation.
The OPS is open everyday 4pm-8pm. At the door to the OPS there is a care cupboard with harm reduction supplies available for anyone and everyone. It is asked that everyone grabs the supplies they need and carry on to avoid crowding at the cabinet so that staff can continue to refill supplies. In addition to the OPS, Two peers from SUSTAIN are working in Tla’amin as outreach workers. They deliver harm reduction supplies and naloxone to members.

Drug Checking is also offered at this location. Service is provided in-person Monday, Tuesday, Friday, 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the CRC (4752 Joyce Ave.). Lift Community services offers free, anonymous drug checking services including FTIR Spectrometer services and fentanyl test strips, as well as free substance use and harm reduction information and resources. Testing takes a small sample about the size of a match-head and about 10 minutes. This is a free, confidential service and clients do not need to provide any personal information. The staff are trained FTIR spectrometer technicians and can tell you:
  • What the main active ingredient is
  • If other drugs may be mixed in
  • If cutting agents have been used as a filler
  • Up to 3- 4 components, including approximate proportions
  • Whether your sample contains trace amounts of fentanyl and/or some fentanyl analogues
